Tom Scott

>It's not that he loses money if you buy elsewhere, but he makes more if you buy directly from L-N. All of the stores that sell his items buy at the same wholesale price (I assume). L-N then gives them a "suggested retail price" for selling the item.

Now if you purchase directly from Tom, he not only gets the profit that he would normally get selling wholesale, but also the mark-up for the retail price.

>Nice driveby gloat and name drop! One of these days, if there is a show within 800 miles, I shall have to attend one. Sounds like great fun.

>Sure, that's true, but Tom would also have to hire/train more people to handle the selling and shipping functions, to say nothing of more space.

>Yeah, that's why I've bought directly from LN in the past, not that I have a huge collection of LN planes; but I think we may not be doing him any favors.

Something else to consider...

Tony - Memphis

>I don't know Tom's deal with his distributors, and really don't care, but I will throw this out... I used to be an engineer at a very well known performance engine parts company...we had an agreement with our distributors that we would not sell direct. This helped us maintain a wide network of distribution. We did sell direct, but our first plan of attack was to suggest a local or mail order company. We sold parts on 30/45/90 terms depending on the company. Anyway, that's another arrangement that exists out there.

Tony

PS - I have bought my LN stuff from them simply because its worked out that way! My wife bought me a block plane for my birthday one year...LN didn't have any in stock, so they got one back from some distributor or something so she could have it in time for my birthday! Now that's worth a few bucks!
