I think the couple of days we had to deal with a capcha picking out objects in photos to get in was the last straw. Too bad, he has a lot of great chemistry and other expertise to offer us.

I access this site through the tiles that Firefox puts up for my most visited sites. I could bookmark each forum but I choose to access through the tiles. It's my choice.

I have not gotten worked up about the constant rearrangement of the forum menu but I do sense the frustration level rising given that there is no apparent reason or benefit from the changes. If there is some expected benefit that the site will derive from these changes I would love to hear what it is but otherwise it may be time to pick a layout and move on.

Since I have been navigating through the forum pulldowns I am surprised that they did not work. They have been working for me in all of their implementations.

I would like to thank Peter for all the effort and work he has put in, it is a thankless job. What may work on the forum for you may not work for someone with a different platform.

As I told Bill when he said he was leaving us for a month, Peter's contributions here were overdue and necessary. Recall a year ago when we were still running my old unsupported forum software and hitting all sorts of problems. Peter bailed us out but he didn't stop there. He's now reorganized the entire site, brought back ancient archives, added new features that you are welcome to use or lose, and reengineered our pages to make them friendly to every platform and device type. He's still at it, devising creative solutions to the neverending challenges of this sort of enterprise, sometimes breaking things to find a better way. I support his efforts and have resisted temptations to make things different, not better. I wrote the first several thousand pages of this site, with the barest minimum of programming skills. Peter is an expert. We should all be willing to be patient with his ongoing efforts. The continued evolution of this site is worth our support.

There is absolutely no doubt that WoodCentral is a smoother, better running and better looking set of forums since Peter came on board. It is important to look at this big picture. It is also important to understand that changes are likely to continue with fine tuning. So where is the problem?

The problem is that changes take place without any warning. It is not the major changes which are stressful, but the frequent, minor changes, such as to the Index system. This can change day-to-day. I have no idea about the size of WoodCentral’s membership, but imagine it is smaller than many others, being made up of larger “old timers”, like myself. I do know that the average age is around 70. Old farts get used to a system, and work with it reasonably comfortably even if it is clunky. It just becomes the forum’s personality, and is then endearing. When there are constant small changes, supposedly for efficiency, it does not go down well. 

Suggestion: before making further changes to the Index and any other switch or presentation, obtain some feedback to determine who it is likely to be valued, and then warn the members about coming changes. No surprises.

I feel the best way to prevent becoming an old curmudgeon is to deal with changes as they occur.

Keeps the brain nimble.

As for  Peter, an experienced programmer, having to consult  a bunch of senior citizens would be  cruel and unusual punishment.
