Music box progress
I started on my music box project yesterday. The first step was to separate the lid from the body of the box. As you know, the accepted method for this is to cut one side, then shim and tape that side before cutting the next. So I needed shims the thickness of the kerf, which on my Trim-O-Saw is .096. I squared up a piece of pine then sliced a half dozen .096 shims off using the hold-in clamp and my little homemade tenon fence, which allows you to make a cut at a very accurately predetermined distance from the blade.
Next, I commenced to cut the box itself. The distance from the bottom edge to the blade is determined by a cross-feed bracket that mounts on the rail of the saw and slides on a feed screw with great precision.
And, voila! The cuts match perfectly. I'll remove any slight saw marks with a sharp block plane.
Not many people have saws like this, so I realize this post may not have much instructional value, but you can do the same thing with a tablesaw using the rip fence to space the cuts accurately.
Then I milled up some Brazilian rosewood for the interior lining. More on this later.
