Round nose router bit (or veining bit)?

Freud has some round nose router bits in the 1/8" to 3/16" diameter - that's about where I would like to be for the grooves in a project.
As I will be following a template, I would prefer to have a bearing on the bit. I suppose I could just make a slotted template at 1/4" wide and rely on the shaft to act as a pseudo bearing - but that does mean I have to make a slotted template.
Thoughts?

How about a core box bit with a bearing? You can buy sets of collars with set screw and various bearings. OTOH, if you can use the shaft it is the same diameter as the tip, making the pattern easier. But it may wear quickly if you have more than a few to do.
Or and end mill or ball mill?

Nothing that small uses bearings. You can use a router insert and appropriately sized template. Or as you stated, you could use the bit shank as a guide. This is common with trimming bits for laminates.

Not sure if this is what Garth means with a 'router insert' but a collar set into the router plate will work. I personally prefer a bearing on a bit to using a collar because there is no offset to have to consider; that makes the template sizing easier. But it is a workable solution when you can't find the 'right' bit with a collar.
Also if depth of cut works right, you could MAYBE find a collar the same diameter as your bit - eliminating the offset - but that may not be easy for any particular sized bit.

Rockier and others have 1/4” ID bushings that are 5/16” OD. I can use one of those with a 1/4” shaft diameter router bit. I wouldn’t have to use a bearing and I could use a single sided template.

It sure seems like a bushing is going to be it for a bit that small. You'd just have to figure out the offset. Something I'd be inclined to try would be to create a guide with a slot near the center, the slot accomodating the guide bushing snugly. Center the slot over the desired groove and clamp.

This is such a guide.....it uses the router base to center the router.....and has an attached fence on the back to make the jig 90* to the work piece......
