Curious about age of members. I'm 71

Curious about age of members.  I'm 71

Tim Greif - West of Chicago

Not really OT since I feel woodworkers are generally thought of as "older". I'd be curious about how the age of our contributors, readers, lurkers and everyone else here looks across the spectrum. Are we getting younger people interested and/or involved in woodworking or are we destined to stay in the present age demographic forever? I started playing with woodworking back in the 70s, but did not really get serious until 20 years ago, thinking I needed something to occupy my time in retirement. That has proved not to be the case. I have plenty to do. So not as much woodworking as originally planned.

You don't need to provide an explanation if you don't want. If you want, simply post your age in the subject line with no message. This'll be fun to see.

There's plenty of young blood in woodworking, it's just people younger than, say, 40 don't do forums. They grew up with internet that already had "social" "networks", so if you wondering what a younger generation does - troll Facebook and Instagram for a bit. I could save you a dozen of clicks though: they buy epoxy in industrial quantities, also they seem be really crazy about chopping food. There are some happy exceptions too, but mostly epoxy and cutting boards.

I'm 86 and doing mostly smaller things these days, since I am having a hard time handling the larger pieces, but I still enjoy my daily shop time none the less.

I turn 70 near the end of this month. Been doing woodworking for about 25 years. I started as a carpenter but I'm really a tool junkie. I found my niche after a process of elimination. Building cabinets, clock cases and then I discovered windsor chairs. I got hooked on the chair building tools and process.

I've been woodworking since sometime around 5th grade, but the results were nothing to write home about. Carving boxes out of turning blanks was a lot of what I did during college when I should have been diligently doing my homework.

I agree that there are plenty of younger people interested in woodworking still, but they find info in different ways than those of us who were around for the rise of the internet and the subject specific list serves and later forums that came with it.

I turned 74 in mid-September which was, by coincidence, the day my HS class of '65 was having a reunion brunch (55 years plus 1 due to the pandemic). I've been retired for over 24 years now so take that you poor working stiffs... ;-)

epoxy...

Its a big deal for the retail shop in Albuquerque. The owner and staff are all on the young side, 30 or less is y guess. No idea what they do with the epoxy but they are always offering classes and stuff for working with it. CNC is something they seem to be getting into with classes too, that is probably big with the younger set.

Fortunately the owner has an eye for nice lumber and turning blanks too, so there is a lot of appeal for the older customers as well as the young ones.

I've got a picture of me with diapers and plastic pants on in my Dad's workshop. I have his small plastic headed mallet in my hands. My brother has the mallet in his shop...inherited most of Dad's shop. There is a small step-stool that Dad made next to me in the pic. That step stool was rebuilt a few years ago. I angled the legs to make it more stable, added pocket screws and glue to all the joints when I reassembled. The stool was probably built in around '52 or '53. I was going to clean it up and repaint but opted not to. The patina is Dad's Love.

At 73 I'm still younger than most of my tools.

Keith L Newton

Back when I got some of my equipment dating back to 1905, I thought they were ancient, but now after owning it for ~40 years, they don't seem all that old. Woodworking has been my profession for over 50 years.

I am 72, but in my mind I am....

Barry Irby

Either 49 or 149, depending on whether I am looking for something I had a minute ago or I just found it. And, I look pretty good for a guy twice my age.

I have been wood working at least 60 years. My grandfather paid me $.15 to make tomato cages, so I turned pro at about 12. Made furniture, a friend and I built the cabinets for the house that won the award for the outstanding example for contemporary architecture in the state in 1971, been a home builder, and earned money repairing antiques and junk furniture while in college. Retired now, spend time in the shop every day, building furniture for my sons and grand children and anyone else interested.

Almost 82 & still making sawdust

Ron in Sterling, CT

I grew up on a farm so my early woodworking was building fences, sheds, barn and house repair. I got real serious about woodworking in the early 70's and did a lot of furniture making as a hobby until I retired in 2002. In recent years I have gotten into intarsia and making small items. I enjoy flea markets, auctions, and restoring old hand tools. As a result I have accumulated more tools than I need.

Curious about age of members

Derek Cohen (in Perth, Australia)

I turned 71 this past January. This appears to be about average for the group.

Touch wood .. pretty healthy. Always been pretty active in sport. Now power walk every evening after a 9-hour work day in my clinical psychology private practice. This year I cut back to 4 days in the practice (since Covid I have been run off my feet), so there is an extra day (if I wish) in the shop. I have spent my whole life doing something with my hands, moving through basic carpentry and home renos to furniture building some 30 years ago.

Regards from Perth

Derek
