Change Password message??

When I last posted a document, I got a pop-up box noting that my password had been compromised in a "data leak" and asked if I wanted to change it. I said yes and then got an error message that the function called was not found.
Is this coming from Ellis or from Apple (I use an IMAC)? Was there a data leak? Or is this some sort of malware from a third party?

I get those messages a lot on my iPad. I think it’s legit. Google the message and you’ll find lots of discussion about it. OTOH I don’t know if it means that YOUR password has leaked but maybe someone else uses it, too, especially if it could be considered to be derived from a common word. One of my passwords Kaspersky says can’t be broken in a trillion years on a home computer.

It comes from your browser. Apparently your browser manufacturers keep track of compromised websites and passwords dumps sold on darknet. The only thing they didn’t get right is a password change form, so yeah, there’s gonna be error messages if you try changing your password through that popup. The browser doesn’t detect changed password correctly too, so it’s going to nag you for a bit. If you have changed your password using a password change form on the forum you can ignore that. If you don’t share passwords across websites (and you don’t, don’t you? ‘cos that’d be the real problem) the worst that could be is spammers spamming some spam on this forum, but I’d bet a Jackson they don’t care about this particular forum.

i've changed my password and it appears again literally on the next login. I don't believe that the passwords are being continuously taken rather there's something about the site setup that chrome doesn't like.
There are 10 sites or so that I get this for (when you go to read details, chrome gives you a list).
I've never had anything funny occur on any of those sites (including, I think, mcmaster carr).

Chrome is suggesting checking and changing saved passwords for sites that were compromised or hacked. Probably a good idea to do so, although I haven't because I never let it save logon info for anything important.

Have you recently updated your browser?
The latest, or next to latest, update for iOS crosschecks all my passwords for websites I visit, and pesters me about about using the same easy to crack password. The messages do carry explanations (multiple sites, same password, bad, bad, bad).
Makes me wonder if you are in a similar situation.

.it suggests changing passwords, and then when I do, it comes right back again and suggests changing the password. So the notification never goes away.

Your browser will have settings for password management or password settings, they usually have options for notifications.
BTW, asking a computer question without providing any details is like trying to fix a car without opening the hood.

Are you changing them in Chrome? Click the three dots at the top right corner of Chrome - click Settings - under Autofill click Passwords. The offenders should be at the top where it says - Check Passwords and the number affected. From there you can remove it or change it.

good point (though I do have chrome remember the password when I do change it - it may have a bundle of them saved for different pages on woodcentral instead of just one).

Maybe it's because I don't use Chrome when I visit WC but it's not listed in either the saved or the never saved list. I always thought the WC password came from the cookie set by the website software when setting it up. However, Edge does show WC in the never saved list but then that means it would have to be manually entered. I don't ever have to do that unless the cookie file gets corrupt.

...when I was young, I would (aside from assembling my own computers, because it was cheaper to do so) go through the software that I used from end to end.
At middle age, I don't do that, so fair chance I have no idea how to set chrome to deal with passwords correctly, but...
...what chrome will do is see a page that it thinks is a different format or different area and ask you over and over if you want it to remember a password. Wood central and some other sites trip it up, and I do allow it to remember passwords sometimes, and other times not. At any rate, the result is that it will think that some threads are deserving of their own password (despite the password being the same for all of them) and make a list in its password manager of 6 or 8 different entry points.
