An out of state friend sent this image to me. This is a craft project. Friend isn't a woodworker, yet.

Apparently this piece of cedar was warped. The friend took a damp cloth to moisten one side to try and remove the warp. That work. So they put it in a dry area with air circulating around it for a few day. Went to look at it and found these stains (mold maybe) on it.

The water used, I'm guessing, was tap water and not distilled water.

What might this be and could you just sand it away? My first thought was a card scraper or a pass or two with a hand plane. I doubt my friend has either.

Bleach? I'm guessing no on that. Sand it?

I'm asking because maybe there is something with water and cedar I don't know or you folks have some good info/ideas.

Maybe ferric chloride reaction with the tannins in the cedar? Is your friend etching printed circuit boards or forging Damascus steel?

I don't know, but highly highly doubt.

Wouldn't it be black then? But you're probably right, it's some kind of chemical reaction, it's a bit too fast for mold. Chemical reactions are usually on surface, I would scrape one stain a little bit to see how deep it is. If it has penetrated it doesn't make any difference, it's going to be a huge pain to remove.

If it were ferric oxide, it would more likely be black. But specifics are well outside my area of expertise. We may well want to wait for Bill Tindall's assessment of the situation.

I sure hope those aren't lines from a thickness planer on that board! Wow! It's not going to be shallow and it's not going to be easy.
