This an update on the groundhog that has been plaguing me. The Have A Heart trap people recommend cantaloupe for ground hogs and I have caught about ten in my yard with it. This one was too wily for that. Been trying cantaloupe and apple with no success. He has been all over the place, under my front balcony, in the neighbor's back yard, and in my driveway. I was fearful that he would tunnel under the blocks that support my shed. Saw him last night in the drive, twice and again this morning. He ran under the shed. This morning I baited the trap with peanut butter and left for the afternoon. Wilson, my dog came out with his nose in the air and went straight to the trap. He is a chubby Chihuahua and I was afraid he would be in the trap when I got home. Nope, Wilson resisted but the groundhog could not.

He died of lead poisoning and is being relocated to the dump.

I will set it again tomorrow to see if he has friends.

As I mentioned I have seen him all over the place and they all look alike to me, so it might be an infestation. I want to catch them before they go into hibernation and I have to deal with them next spring.

Now I get to eat the cantaloupe and the apples.

Apparently peanut butter addiction is rampant among all rodents. Well, maybe not beavers. But if you spread the PB on a piece of maple...

Beware. PB works on skunks, possums, squirrels, mice, rats and raccoons, too. Also, my neighbor has trapped his barn cat many times using that stuff.

Peanut butter is also good for luring pack rats into a trap. You need a rather large trap, though. After i catch one I take it 2-3 miles down a road in the foothills of the national forest area, release it, and call "here, coyote! - dinner!"

I caught and eliminated three groundhogs living under a portable building and saw another one recently.

So far I have caught...

A juvenile Racoon, a Possum, and two Groundhogs. I baited the traps again yesterday and have caught nothing. Somehow I am mildly disappointed. The good news is I did not catch my dog.
