I watched the videos of him cutting those pieces and it was a huge tree. But he wants almost 3 thousand for the pieces for the top, IIRC. 5 thousand for the top and leg material. He is cutting for a Roubo style bench, with two pieces separated by a "tool slot". I can find enough wood to do it without that kind of cost. If I use the two shops nearest to me. Just a low yeild of usable wood for the cost. The bench design that I have in mind is more or less like the one that Lie-Nielsen lists on their page. Just with a leg vise instead of the chain drive two screw face vise. 6'6" by 24" by 4 inch final top thickness. Problem is needed another source as the two places I know of don't have enough good yeild wood. Then I spotted some more pieces that I had but had located in my pile. Should be good and dry in my colorado shop of 25 years.

Just today, I watched him (think his name is Matt.) cut the lower 6 feet or so of a maple tree with a huge number of branches hence a lot of crotch figure. More than 4 feet across the log in most slabs. He has stickered them for a open air drying, could be ready in a year or more. ( So I recall him saying.) IIRC he is in minnesota or michigan.

I have been watching his videos for several years. Watched him build that sawmill and the trailer. And some pretty nice furniture. Since I know little or nothing about metal working and welding, I am impressed. If I built that mill the blade would fly off and kill me and that would be the end of that.

$3000 and $5,000? If he actually sells many at those prices it explains how he can afford two fork lifts and the rest of it. I had no idea of the prices.

I saw him cut the same tree you mentioned. Enormous. I can't "see" what you would do with the slabs. He has not done a river table, but I am skeptical any of them will hold up for years. I watched Dillon (another Youtuber) throw one he claimed he had sold for $5K off the roof because it failed in about three years and he was replacing it.

Here's a couple of slabs for you:

These are my sunglasses resting on the top slab for scale. The slabs are French oak that were used for the "French Oak Roubo Project" (FORP for short), a collaborative project by Jameel Abraham (Benchcrafted) Bo Childs and Ron Brese (Brese Plane). The oak was harvested from the grounds of Versailles palace in France and acquired by Bo Childs of Wyatt Childs specialty wood products company in Barnesville Georgia who hosted the event. Someone submitted a piece of the oak to the national testing lab and the results were interesting. The oak turned out to be American white oak, and believed to be trees that were given by Thomas Jefferson to Marie Antoinette in the late Seventeen Hundreds. If you haven't watched the FORP YouTube video, it's worth your time. You'll see some familiar faces. (link below)

You can get wood where it grows, for the price of firewood. I have a 7 foot slab that I cut some time ago and being beech it really dried out fast. I probably could have used it after a year or so, and it has now been 5 years. Just waiting for a third home or something. I think I paid 50 bucks for the tree. I got enough wood for several benches, and several shops worth of the full compliment of planes. I bought a chainsaw mill 30 years ago, and I have only used it a few times, but it repaid what I paid for it, the first time I used it.

I have built 4 benches for myself at this point, I don't think there is a huge difference with top thickness, it actually screws you up a little to go too thick as most of the bench hardware I had access to does not like really thick wood. Same with some of the hold downs. Of course with the Roubo fad, maybe that is not true of the bencrafted hardware at least. But I have found myself having to dig channels for some of the hardware that existed because there were people who actually made a living at this stuff and had benches to suit. But, I only learned these lessons by building a beefy bench, and the next one, if it comes to that, will be from a huge slab.

You could certainly finger joint, or just butt joint pieces, so long as the perimeter boards are full length or scarfed. I like square dog holes, and those are normally constructed using a cap on the edge. Some people even have found a use for this lamination and doll it up with an easily visible dark strip. But the point is that if you cap the edge, an easy to get 1x4, you will have all the strength you need even if the field is made of butt jointed pieces. A bench does not get worked over on it's whole surface. Usually the heavy thumping would be in the area of the right end leg, and fully supported anyway. If you are working with 4" material it is massively strong, a lot stronger than the material in an automobile show room. One advantage of the Euro style is you have beams under the bench that support any joints or hardware, or heavy use. But your bench will be 4 or more time stronger and 8 times stiffer than the usual pro thing, so I would not worry.

I watched Mat build both the bandsaw mill and the trailer. Certainly has metal working skills! I can't get past that laugh of his and the way he speaks is like he's over-caffeinated. Anyway, I've wondered about something since looking at his stuff.

$3000 and $5,000? If he actually sells many at those prices it explains how he can afford two fork lifts and the rest of it. I had no idea of the prices.

He must make good money between YouTube, selling lumber, and building stuff. As far as I can tell I don't think he has a regular fulltime job. How does he afford that nice RAM truck and all the equipment in his shop, not to mention the materials to build the saw mill and trailer, and the outdoor machines to move heavy things around?

When I mentioned Matt Cremona to you I had no idea what he charged for the wood. And I have no idea what maple sells for.

But, boy do I have a deal for you. I have a red oak slab that is about four feet wide and eight feet long and 3 or 4" thick. I will sell it to you for half a Cremona price, plus shipping. It's been drying in a shed for a year. I might even be able to get it kiln dried for a price. I am about 98% kidding, but let me know. And CNC flattening is available.

When I built mine about 1995, I did two pieces and left a big gap between them, just for fun. This meant two modules with breadboards at the ends. These were held on with hardware bonded 1/2" studs, so they are easy to assemble and disassemble, without any problems of alignment. I use the crack to hold chisels, but a 1/8" crack would be sensible. Most Roubos have bare ends, so you might not want breadboards, but there are ways to hold the top together even if you want it to look like a slab. Basically the original Roubos look like they were built as they were to deal with anchoring a slab as efficiently as possible. Once one starts with sticks, the whole thing is off in another direction anyway.

In am a big believer in at least an 8 foot bench if you can house it. First off it gives you enough real estate to actually handle real jobs in a world with 8 foot ceiling, but if you are making guns, meh. Second, the area to the right of the vice is at least as large as Tage Frid's whole bench, which means the placement of the vice, and it's interference is minimized.

"Leg vice Trendy in hobby shops. One has to ask why they disappeared from shops for decades if they are as functional as the current advocates claim. This vice arrangement suggests you are setting up to have fun doing hand tool work the way it was done way in the past. If that is the goal then the choices are determined. If you are going to make furniture for grandchildren a quick action Record vice is a better choice or maybe one on each end of the bench."

I do think that real vises are great, and the record set-up Michael Fortune used where the jaw is flush is reasonable enough. The Tucker vise on my bench is the most used tool in the shop, but it is not really clear to me that it belongs on the bench. I use it in 4 basic ways:

- Joint cutting. This is something where if you do enough of it, specialized work stations are a lot better;

- Staging work boards or jigs, and that does work pretty well with the bench, but it is used flat which is something very few vises do;

- Carving, like gun stocks or paddles, or small workpieces;

- Handling long boards, and this is a case where any of the traditional vises or hooks would be better.

If I had more space, I would have separate work stations for a lot of this stuff.

A lot of these new/old vices have greater functionality due to the vice wars, so that can't be entirely compared to earlier types.

I Totally agree with Bill that there are usually commercial options, and a bench will normally get you under their minimums. We had an aircraft carrier sized lumber store here in Toronto, all the lumber on the east coast might have gone through there at one time. They had a 500 dollar minimum 20 years ago (since moved). I could easily get service for 150. I paid cash (it was still on the books), knew what I wanted, took what I got. They had great quality. They just didn't want a lot of tire kickers and time wasters.

The first glueups are aimed at being 6 inches wide or less so I can flatten them on my 6 inch jointer. I have many Bessey k-body clamps and other clamps. reasonable strategy. Better alternative would be to convince a shop to run it through their 24" planer of belt sander."

I know that when I built my 8 footer, I had to build a scrub plane to knock the beams into shape for the planer. I had a Ryobii at the time, and I think I fed it to the board and moved the supports as it chugged down the board. Far too heavy when the leverage came into play to run on my planer.

Hand planing is one way to go, but you can also rig one of those Tage Frid deals they now give Nick Offerman credit for, where you have a router running inside a beam/sled that runs on edge mounted rails. Your bench or some material held to it with clamps could be the X axis, so you only need a sled the size of your benches width and a tad. Probably a miserable job, but it will be accurate.

If your jointer outfeed was 24 inches and your beam was 30 pounds and 7 feet long, it would exert an upforce of 75 pounds coming off the knives. I would probably use a jointer plane to tune the edge for glue-up but the power jointer can still chew off a lot of the excess, even should it occur that the tool will not produce the perfect joint for you.

David, I watch several YouTubers and wonder about the income. Matt Cremona, April Wilkerson, (They know each other and Matt went to Texas and helped her build a mill like his) and who ever the Wood Whisperer guy is. He built a magnificent shop and then moved away. Most of these people seem to have nice shops, nice equipment, some of it free, and lots of other stuff and don't seem to sell much in the way of furniture. I am baffled. Sometimes I think they are famous for being famous.

My son who has made a little money on YouTube tells me that many of them make just enough to keep them hooked. They may make $40 or $50K a year which is not enough to live off but so much they have to keep doing it to supplement whatever else they are doing.

I watch some guys sawing with a Wood Mizer and then think, If I had enough money to buy the mill, the truck to haul it, the tractor or fork lift to shuffle the wood around, the space for the building and the building, etc, I could just take 10% of that money and buy enough wood to last me the rest of my life.

Mostly I just want to understand....

I believe April Wilkerson makes income from her CNC work. I think she, like others, are sponsored by major brand equipment manufacturers. Laguna may sponsor April and I think helped with pricing of one or several CNC machines. The last thing I watched of hers I think was about her getting ready to setup her new shop for the work she does.

The Wood Whisperer certainly has sponsors but I haven't looked at any of his stuff in a while.

The thing is, they all make money from the YouTube thing, and the popular ones get sponsorships. Enough to live on? I don't know.

having a bench top that thick is nice if you start doing really heavy work on your bench (using the vise to hold wood that you're resawing with a coarse saw, etc). That's where limits of benches with some racking and screw on vises start to feel really limiting (and constant adjusting of clamps will just lead to not doing whatever it is any longer).

Chris does much in a showboating way (along with hints of missing practical experience - like making a cherry bench years ago and cutting the ends off with a circular saw instead of easily cross cutting them with a strong hand rip saw - which works a treat in larger slabs and really thick wood), but people want that. Nobody's going to want to see a modern practical version that costs $800 all in and uses coil spring hold fasts.

But there are cases where fat legs and a fat top is really nice, because everything doesn't have to be perfect on the bench for it to still be solid. Does take a little counterboring on the dog holes, though, unless one can't handle drilling holes because modern dog holes don't match the fantasy period.

The log and slabs is just lovely, though. I can imagine a fellow 250 years ago getting something like that from a mill and truing it until it stops moving and having no interest in laminating a bench top because of the "cost" in labor vs relatively inexpensive widely available huge slabs.

Back in "the fantasy period" a slab would have made a lot more sense, since all the lumber was broken down initially with pit saws, so you could stop and use the slab after the first four cuts. The disadvantage of the additional years of air drying the thick slab until it stopped moving was not nearly so much of a disadvantage if kiln drying was not available and dimensioned lumber was so much more labor intensive.

I wonder how many FORP participants gort their Roubo bench home and only then realized that they didn't have a crew on call and a fork lift parked behind the shop. :D

I'm not sure I understand your racking complaint about screw-on vises. I now have and have had several in the past that have never given me problems with racking. These have included Record and Columbian cast iron and steel vises and Emmert clone and Oliver patternmaker's vises. That's probably a lot of the reason that Record quick-release vises now demand such high prices. OTOH, there are many other modern screw-on vises that have serious racking problems. Racking can also be a problem with traditional wooden vises that have been abused or just ridden hard and put away wet too many times.

Were I to build a bench (I purchased mine from the maker) I would follow Ron Paulk's modular design in plywood.

It's solid and heavy, but not immobile (hence the popularity for jobs jobsite use).

It is not optimized for holdfasts but surface or edge clamping is practical.

It's essentially a torsion box design that can be scaled to suit a given space.

Paulk built his to fit his 10' trailer.

resawing wide boards....

just about everything in woodworking is fairly easy on benches. If it's not, we're doing something that is probably too jerky.

However, gripping a wide board in a bench and resawing it with a four foot long frame saw with giant teeth is an earthmoving venture. If the saw is a bit aggressive, the vise needs to have more holding power than a typical quick grip vise. A leg vise gripping over its entire length is good.

I remember isaac smith showing a setup where he'd clamped boards to everything, so I tried the same clamping them to a bench leg and quickly realized that I want to be able to lift the board every foot or so and fastening and loosening supplement clamps was a no-no.

AS to the number of people actually resawing 14" wide billets or 12" wide long boards, I'd bet it's not that high, so this is a pretty unique case.

I've used Isaac's saws a couple of times, and even built my own frame saw (not nearly as nice as Isaac's).

I think for that operation, especially for a slab 3 or 4 inches thick, and if I were younger and in better physical condition, I would lay the board across a couple of sturdy saw benches, and saw standing on top of the slab. I still might need someone else to help me move the slab and horses periodically.
