Hardware sources?

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

There are many sources of Period hardware- Ball and Ball, Whitechapel, etc. Whitechapel has some hardware from later periods. Lee Valley hardware has more. Are there other sources of quality hardware in styles more modern than 1850?

clarification

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

I am not looking for sources of hinges, and this sort of "hidden" hardware. Rather I am looking for what would be used to open doors and drawers.

You will have better results if you narrow down your search for a particular style:

https://www.stedmunds.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Design-Movements-Timeline.pdf

and then include the style and then add the specifics, for example:

"Bauhaus and style and furniture and pulls and handles"

You can also restrict your search to "images" or "shopping" categories.

Another way to decide on a style is go down this rabbit hole:

repeating the request with more clarity

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

Lee Valley, Whitechapel, Ball and Ball etc. have extensive and wide ranging catalogs of knobs and pulls to open doors and drawers.

Are there other sources with catalogs, preferably print, that are similar to Lee Valley catalog offering a broad line of door and drawer opening hardware? I am looking for other general sources to study for when I am designing a new piece that could be contemporary or Period. I have sufficient Period hardware sources; lacking sources post Federal(or thereabouts) and modern.

Typical situation: son-in-law, "build me a chest of drawers"

me: "look through these furniture books and tell me what you like"

son-in-law: "something like this one"

me:"what do you want for hardware"

son-in-law: "I don't know. Show me some examples"

me: I only have this Lee Valley catalog. I wish I had more examples. I'll ask on WC if there are other catalogs."

I thought that Kneale Brownson's suggestions were good.

I agree with Charlie (and Kneale). Further, in this particular case, I would hand them a copy of "Elements of Style" by Stephen Calloway and Elizabeth Cromley and a Van Dyke's Restorers catalog and a pad of Post-It Notes. The VanDyke's catalog is free, and the book is less than $4, used, including shipping, from AbeBooks.

thanks to those that pointed me to this source

may be a resource. Apparently no print catalog available, but they do have articles on hardware styles. Somewhat similar to VanDykes.

yet another "antique" source

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

Does anybody except Lee Valley have a catalog of "modern" hardware?

BTW Van Dyke is evil. I looked at a drop pull and their ad and this pull has showed up in every internet search I have done. Deleted Cookies which meant remembering the arcane procedure for restoring ability to post here.

Its a bit hard to find a modern only sort of supplier, but a lot of outfits that sell every style will have modern looking stuff. I find it much harder to distinguish modern from contemporary than it is to distinguish georgian from federal.

My wife is on a mid-century modern kick right now, she bought most of our recent kitchen hardware from Wayfair.com. Some of it I really like, but be warned, it will take hours of scrolling past ugly stuff to find a few good things. Its one of those huge "decorator" suppliers that has, apparently, everything.

Woodworker's Hardware (https://www.wwhardware.com) and Custom Service Hardware (https://www.cshardware.com) both have extensive inventories of cabinet hardware, both traditional and modern. For CSHardware, search "pulls" in their search function. The cabinet hardware is not readily apparent in their online index. I've dealt with both companies and found them pleasant to work with.

I remember you are on a limited data internet plan.

How do I get Chrome to open PDF instead of downloading?

Open PDFs in Chrome

On your computer, open Chrome.

At the top right, click More Settings.

At the bottom, click Advanced.

Under "Privacy and security," click Content settings.

Near the bottom, click PDF documents.

Turn off Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome.

Your wife has good taste (just like me 8))

Atomic Ranch is a great source of info for mid-century stuff:

https://www.atomic-ranch.com/

Another one is Dwell :

https://www.dwell.com/

The index to advertisers in any magazine is a time saver when looking for specific stuff.

catalog requested

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

Thanks. I find it relatively easy to sit with "client" and hard copy catalog and choose hardware. Much less so paging through 50 screens of electronic catalog.
