Green & Green Style QSWO Door *LINK*

HC Sakman

>Hi Everybody,

It's unfinished and no stain glass yet, but I think it's worth to take a look at it as is.

Some finicky joinery there, thanks to templates. All the black pegs and inlays are ebony.

Owners are obviously cat lovers, I thought I mention it in case you haven't caught on! ;-)

My only complaint is the cheap hardware on it, but hey... It flows and that's what matters.

Number of pegs on the "in" side are fewer (only two on each joint, but staggared with the pegs at the front. I figured it'd look too busy with inside decor, which won't be in full blown G&G style. All pegs are functional, not just decoration.

Sweeper is installed into 3/32"x1" deep kerf. It looks very disguised, yet very effective.

Clients are thrilled, I am happy for that as well as finally opening some room in my shop.

Thanks,

Chico...

It'd have been very difficult without your help Harvey.

Thank you!

>Hi Chico,

I am glad the joinery lesson I gave you during my visit this summer worked out for you....that chisel work is really sharp!

Stunning work my friend, I can hardly wait to see what it looks like when you cut in those cat doors...

Take care,

Jim

Pretty nifty, Chico

Ellis Walentine

>Overall, this is an intriguing approach to the Greene & Greene style. The arch, the overlap, the pegs and the material convey the feeling of the style very nicely. Can't wait to see it finished with the glass installed.

You haven't told us much about the construction, but my hunch is that you used loose tenon joinery in those patterned joints, and tht the joints go all the way through though I can think of another way you might have done it with more of a lap joint approach. I'm curious as to your use of glued-in fillets to hold the panels and glass. I assume the glass will be held in place by matching screwed-in fillets on the other side.

How thick is the door overall and how thick are the panels? Did you use ball bearing hinges? And what's the story with the cats?

What a wonderful and ambitious commission, Chico. Good work. What fun.

OK, Here are the details...

HC Sakman

>Hi Ellis,

How thick is the door overall and how thick are the panels? Did you use ball bearing hinges? And what's the story with the cats?

Rails have 6-1/2" long tenons. Core of this door is 3 layers of 1/2" thick marine plywood. (Center layer is the tenons and mortises, which are so tight, I had to groove and drill the tenons to allow some air to escape.) It works well once the glue is in of course. Skinned with 1/4" thick bandsawn veneer (That's how the 7" wide stiles are bookmatched) Rails are edged with 1/2" thick oak, rails are edged with 1 to 2 inches wide oak then veneered with 1/4" thick oak. Actually rail veneers are thicker to create some more depth and different reveals at the joints. This is the 4th. door I built with this technique.

You're right about your assumption how the glass will be held in place. 7/16" x 1/2" trim carefully step drilled to receive small scews and the to be plugged with 1/4' oak plugs cut out from the same stock. Side windows' trim will be pinned with 23G nailer. Windows and the solid 1" panels in the door are sitting in foam strip for weather as well as making it rattle free.

I used 4 ball-bearing hinges. Here is the inside shot of it.

Cats....? They just love cats, that's all.

Thanks,

Chico...

>I'll be patiently waiting for the stained glass to go in and finished, hung in its final spot. It won't be happening for another 3~4 months.

Thanks Jim,

Chico...

PS:I used my Japanese slick that you sharpened at these joints indeed! Works well thank you. Although it costed me a new table saw top, thanks to your zealous sharpening session with water, but it was worth it! ;-)

You have outdone yourself this time (or have I said that before?). Hmmm--you continue to outdo yourself. Thanks for sharing. You are so inspiring.

We at GOOGLE HQ would like to order 200,

>Of those doors for our office facility....

Boy, that would be a pleasant dream commision.

As usual beautiful work, Chico. That is one gorgeous door that I'm sure will open the door even more (pun intended) to clients coming your way. Some neighbor or visitor to that house is going to want a door like that, but maybe a little wider, or a little different. Who better to contact for that job than the craftsman that built that door. Hang on to those templates.

The pictures don't do it justice

Charles R. Smith

>I had the pleasure of seeing the doors in almost-completed state a week ago. These pictures, as good as they are, don't do the door justice. The design is wonderful, the wood is gorgeous, and the workmanship is flawless. In fact, I was so blown away by the door that I forgot to ask Chico if I could admire his new baby daughter.
