Another photo resizing Question.

Barry Irby

>I built my son a bed and would like to post a picture of here. I hounded him into sending me one. He sent a 4309KB file that is 3072 X 2304 Pixels. All I have for software is whatever Kodak EasyShare is. I.E. crap that is improperly named. (Should be Difficult share or just Useless)

The bed is in mission style and has lots of little verticle pickets. When I chopped the picture down to about 51 KB what I got was lots of squggley lines in a tiny picture. I don't know how to set the number of pixels or any of those other things. I have been trying to "save As" to cut the size. Can someone help me out? Either "splain" it to me or ride by Ft. Campbell and whack my son on the head for me.

>You're right. He left here a goofy kid, spent a year in Iraq, Came back as Fightin' Jack. Asked him how he got the name. Said he liked to lead his squad from the front. One day he calls in for air support and they hear the guy back at base on the radio say, "load the choppers, Fightin' Jack's going to need more ammo." It stuck. So, I would only whack him on the head if he let me. Don't try it.

OTOH, he is still my goofy kid and when I asked for pic's of the bed, somehow I expected more than one and a little more enthusiasum. He could have set the camera to a little lower resolution.

On a different note: Went to visit him and we stopped in a gas station. The Gas Pump wanted me to enter my ZIP Code along with the credit card. I said "ZIP CODE, never had one ask for the ZIP Code." Guy working at the station said "Yeah, we are near Ft. Campbell and we have a lot of trouble with solders stealing gas." I looked at him and said "You wouldn't have a gas station or a job here at all if it weren't for Ft. Campbell, my son doesn't steal your gas, and I will be buying my gas somewhere else." Hung the hose up, canceled the sale and left. Just thought they should know which side the bread is buttered on.

>Barry,

Here is a method that I currently use.

First visit http://www.irfanview.net/ and download the free imaging program.

Next run Irfan and load your image.

Select the menu option Image.

Select Resize/Resample.

At this point you have a lot of choices.

One way is to select set new as percentage of original and enter the percentage: 39,000 to the images current size.

The images current size appears on the status bar at the bottom of Iranviews window.

For the Resize select Resample (better quality).

Click OK and save the new image using a new file name.

PS I use the Lanczos Filter as the resample method because it gives me the best results. Also Cornelius Lanczos is a personal hero of mine. In the 1950s I was fortunate to take math courses for Professor Lanczos and I have yet to meet a more intelligent and amazing individual!

Use Paint to resize

Ray Johnson

>When I get the pictures off of my Kodak camera, they are usually over a MB in size. I do the following:

1.) Open the picture in MS Paint. Click Start-All Programs-Accessories-Paint.

2.) On the top menu line, select "Image", then click on "Stetch/Skew".

3.) The "Stetch/Skew" window should be displayed. It allows you to change "Stretch" or "Skew" percents. Change the "stretch" percents for both horizontal and vertical to 20 percent. Then click "OK".

4.) Save the file. In top menu line, click "File" then "Save As". Rename the file and save it as a JPEG (.jpg) file.

In my example the original file size was 1147 KB (1.1 MB). After using Paint to change the size, the file is 39K and the quality is still very good.

Another Option -I got fed up with resizing

Chad Pearson

>I got fed up with resizing...my camera will not take a pic at 40KB even at the lowest resolution. I joined Putfile (Putfile.com) and that made it a lot easier. It also allows you to post much larger pictures here. It is especially useful for trying to sell things where a bigger picture really helps show the condition of the tool.

All you need to do is post on putfile (automatically resizes) and then link to it.

Here is an example:

Mail it to yourself

Mark Goodall - ATL - tooljunkie

>Windows Outlook Express and Outlook have an automatic feature.....

If you email a picture from your "My Pictures" folder, it will ask you if you want to resize it to make it smaller and "Email Friendly", or leave it as is. Just, email it yourself, tell it to make it "Email" friendly, and let it resize it.

Then when you receive it in your InBox, it will be smaller.

Happy Woodworking!

Picasa

Bartee (metro Atlanta)

>It's Free From Google. I use it for all my digital photo management from my digital camera.

Get it here http://picasa.google.com/

The you can use the "Crop" feature to get the part of the photo you want and then use the menu command

File | Export Picture to folder to change the JPG quality factor and resize the image. typically a picture of 640 pixels wide is a very good size.

You can then also create a Free web photo album and do things like this. This was code generated in the Picasa web page to put pictures in blogs. I just did a copy and paste of this code over to this post. Pretty cool !!

Yes I am a web GEEK !!! and I love everything google, because it's free and it works.

What is also nice is this does not use WC band width :-)

Irfanview

Jerry Nicholson

>I just now checked Irfanview.com and the free Irfanview download seems to be working fine. It gives a list of more than a dozen places to download from. I chose CNET and downloaded version 399.

Another excellent choice for resizing, cropping, and other picture adjustments is xnview (also free).

MS Power Toys *LINK*

Eddie Pacheco, San Jose, Ca.

>If you're using MS Windows 95 or XP there's a free download from Microsoft for resizing pictures. It's a nice feature that after installation, gives you the resize option when you "right click" on a photofile it allows you to quickly resize a photo. It works on picture files straight from the camera's memory.

After installing the resize power toy you have to reboot your machine. Thereafter when you "right click" on a picture file you'll see the new "resize" option.

>It's not bad...I have a couple issues to work out but for the most part I'm quite happy. I also live in Minnesota and despite the unusually warm weather (and a garage heater) I don't get out there during the winter much. I need to make a couple of minor tweaks (I'm getting a little snipe) and I don't feel like hanging out in the chilly garage to do that.

I upgraded to this jp from a Ridgid 6 inch jointer and 13 inch lunchbox. I'm glad I kept the lunchbox because for small things it is much handier than rolling out the big guy. I think it gives a little bit better of a surface finish also.

On the plus side I have had tremendous success using the Felder as a wide-surface jointer. It is really nice to glue up wide panels and then use the 16 inch jointer to clean it up.

Bruce, I think I met you one time at the woodcraft in Bloomington. If I remember correctly it was a few years back when Jorgenson was having their anniversary clamp sale and there was a big line-up.

Regards,

cp

Just one issue

Dan Donaldson

>It is good to use the outside hosting, but one thing is that after the post is archived, if anyone ever finds it in a search and the pictures are removed from that outside host, they are lost to the post forever. We have had a few instances where someone was looking for info on old posts, and the pictures were no linger available.

If you have something that has a bunch of pictures, you might want to think about whether it might make a good article or shop shot. If you submit it as an article, you do not need to resize anything, and it will be available for posterity.

>I don't recall being at Woodcraft for a Jorgenson sale. I would have remembered that event and you in particular. I never forget conversing with a fellow woodworker. If you're in the twin cities some place, maybe we can arrange to get together and swap lies some time. I'd like to see that Felder.

Re: MS Power Toys

Eddie Pacheco, San Jose, Ca.

>I'm sure it's working, Barry. (famous last words) When you choose an image file to resize, the "powertoys" program creates a new image file with the same name and "small, medium, or large" in parenthesis as a suffix.

An as example, on my camera's flash memory, I have an image file named "DSCN1377.JPG" of 530KB size. When I resize it to small a new file appears named "DSCN1377(small).JPG with a size of 30KB. This new file name is at the bottom of the list and out of sequence. Igf you have a lot of image files in a folder it's hard to spot the new file.

Have a nice Sunday.
