Gift Suggestion--Long

James Fox

>I'm usually lurking around the turning side of Woodcentral, but I also occasionally make "flat stuff." On both boards I sometimes see messages asking for suggestions for gifts for Christmas, birthdays, etc.

Attached is a photo of something that almost anyone can make (how hard can it be if I did it???). I've made 10 banks so far--some for my children and grandkids, but also as gifts for expectant parents at baby showers. With the cost of college (heck...the cost of gas) today who couldn't use a way to save a bit.

I get the doors from e-bay. various prices, check out the auctions. Usually have to clean them up and figure out the combination (not hard). Record the combination, cause someone will eventually loose one.

This one is Padauk, but almost any kind of wood will do, I've used maple, mahogany, canary wood, walnut, etc. There were some plans in a past issue of Woodcraft magazine--mine is pretty close to that with the addition of a partition on the inside to keep the coins out of the opening mechanism.

Comments & questions welcome.

James

>Good Morning James,

I'm gonna make a couple of them for my grandkids next year. What was your source for the door and slot?

Made 5 of them

>for the grandchildren this year. The kids just loved them. We have one grandson who is into paleontology and geology, so I used a piece of ancient Kauri wood for his. Others were made of mesquite, walnut, and ambrosia maple. I bought more doors and will make some to sell.

>It's been a couple of years so perhaps you may not have recalled that that Woodcraft Magazine article was written by Wood Central regular A.J. Hamler, back when he was the editor of that publication. In fact, the banks were featured on the cover of the very first issue of that magazine (which also featured a marginally amusing "Offcuts" column; DAMHIKT).

I've attached a picture of a couple of banks that A.J. crafted for that article. I'm pretty sure he said he gets his doors on eBay, among other places. Perhaps he'll chime in and let you know where he obtains the other supplies such as the escutcheons for the coin slots.

>George, you can also get the door and slot from Penn State. I'm now wasiting for it to warm up so I can use my shop again and build the banks.
