OT: Garage door opener woes

David Hay @ Denver

>This is way off topic, but hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction.

We have a 1/2 HP Craftsman garage door opener which stopped working this morning. The door came up, but won't go down. The opener only makes a relay noise (click click) and the light comes on from all remotes and the wired switch. The motor makes no sound at all. The sensors at the door opening work, from what I can tell, in that intersecting the beam turns off the light on the sensor, and if something is blocking the beam, the light on the main unit flashes rapidly as it usually does when something is in the way.

I can open and close the door manually without trouble (when disconnected from the opener). In addition, I've opened up the unit and manually turned the motor shaft to close the door. If I move it far enough and then hit the button, it opens the door to it's full position.

I've read elsewhere that the door can sometimes get jammed on the bolt that's in the track right before the motor unit, so I've removed the bolt and fiddled with the up limit adjuster...no luck.

The final piece of information I can provide is that the main unit has a green light on the back that will blink 5 times, pause, and then blink 5 times again.

Anyone have an idea on what to check next? Suggestions on a better place to post this question?

Thanks!

David

>Something like this happened to my garage door, I fixed it by adjusting a dial on the unit that controls how much force is used to move the door, it's a safety feature on my garage door opener.

>You might also check to see that the safety lights on the floor are lined up,sometimes if they get out of alignment, the door will not work and the top lights will blink to tell you thats the problem.....good luck

>Thanks for the suggestion. I tried adjusting this as well, to no avail. I should mention that it's very cold here right now. Would that have any influence?

This has happened once before and it seemed to just magically start working again...but I can't seem to get it to work at all anymore.

Thanks!

David

>Does your owner's manual give any indication of what the 5 flashes might mean?

It seems like most of the thing is working. I wonder if the click-click is the relay pulling in to power the motor to close the door but the motor is bad???

>Unfortunately, I don't have the manual (previous owners installed the opener) and I can't seem to find one online. The motor is working, because I can get the opener to open the door...I just can't get it to close it.

>Yes, but doesn't it have to reverse to close the door? If so, could be some part of the reversing circuit gone bad which may or may not be within the motor.

>David The way it sounds that the trouble may be in your relay. Unplug your opener and locate your relay. If it is an open relay, where you can get at the contacts, try to push the cantact arm up an down and see if all the contacts move. If not you may have a set of contacts "fussed" together. If so just put a screwdriver inbetween them and undo them. If this isn`t the problem look around and check all your wires and make sure they are all connected and not burned and also check the motor. Another thing, I know you already checked it, check the eyes, unmount one and put on enough wire to bring it to the other and get your remote and try to get it to work by having them within a couple inchs. Just try to get the lights to go on and off with pushing your remote. Good luck Larry in NWOhio

>David Sorry in my last sentence I didn`t mean to get your lights to Work with your remote. I meant to get the door to work to work as you get the lights to work. Larry

Probably RPM sensor *LINK*

Tim Greif - West of Chicago

>My BIL is a garage door guy. Five blinks generally means a bad speed sensor (or brain board speed input). To get a service call for this might be more than the opener's worth. See the link below for reference. You can probably call Liftmaster (Chamberlain makes the openers for Sears) technical support with your model number to confirm.

>Thanks for everyone's help. After exhausting all the options I could think of (including those suggested here), I ended up buying and installing a new opener yesterday.

>That's how I've taken care of it in the past. Mess with the problem for two days, then replace it like I should have in the beginning. Life's too short.

Don't forget where you saved the instruction paperwork. You DID keep the paperwork, didn't you?
