Adjustable Wrench, What's the right way...

I have one!

>Actually, I have one. The size of the opening for the nut is graduated in mm on the side of the head. I got it in Australia, but it was made in China.

The confusing thing about this adjustable spanner is that the open/close direction that you turn the little knob is reversed compared to the rest of my cresent wrenches.

Other than the reversed knob operation it is by far the best made and smoothest operating adjustable spanner than I own. The manufacturing tolerances are very obviously much higher than the typical wrench.

I have 2 sets of Crescent wrenches, SAE & Metric

>Like my regular (non-adjustable) open wrenches, and my socket sets, I also have two sets of Crescent adjustable wrenches, one SAE and the other Metric.

The SAE wrenches are for most of my woodworking machinery that was built in the USA, as well as all the stuff I make that uses SAE sized hardware. I also have a set of everything in MEtric since I work on Honda motorcycles alot.

You know.... when a Crescent adjustable wrench doesn't fit, it's because I'm using a SAE adjustable wrench on my Hondas or my Metric adjustable wrenches on my Delta machinery.

;) ;) ;)

Happy Woodworking!

Me too

>Oh what a didactically pedantic discussion of a crescent wrench. The one I have is Whitworth that came with an Austin Healy I bought in 1959.

Mark, I've got you beat

>I've got one the is both SAE and metric. If you use it one way is 12" long. If you turn it over it automagically becomes 300mm long.

The last Word? The Final Act!

>Good Grief, Charlie Brown:

I had a set of four Craftsman adjustable spanners which had inch capacity on one side and metric capacity on the others. There was no indicator arrow on either side of any wrench which indicated the preferred direction of rotation. I had them about 15 years. They were well made and had a beautiful fit and finish. Up until I read this thread, I liked them very much. But since they were Craftsman, had no rotational direction indicator, and since I didn't want to risk being unsafe, I threw them all away. AAarrraaaagggg.

Re: Counterfeit Crescent Wrenches?

>Mark, you are correct... the arrow does point in a direction that puts the adjustable part of the wrench on the leading side... I got it backwards... but it seems that every time I use them the arrow is always pointing in the opposite direction I'm turning!
