How Google can drive traffic spikes

The following image in our gallery shows over 75K views since April 2026.

I did a Google image search that returned the following:

The image shows two vintage-style

infill metal hand planes (specifically, a smoother plane and a rebate or similar specialized plane) featuring brass bodies and hardwood (such as mahogany or rosewood) infills, similar in style to classic British planes made by makers like Norris or St. James Bay Tool Co..

I followed up by replying that the image appears on our website woodcentral.com with over 75K views and was curious if Google is pushing all that traffic to it.

Google responded:

Yes, Google is almost certainly the main source driving that traffic spike.

When an obscure or older image in an archive suddenly accumulates tens of thousands of unexpected views (like the 000 0059 image noted by the site admin), it is usually driven by Google’s automated discovery and recommendation systems.

The traffic is likely coming from three primary sources:

1. Google Discover

This is the most common culprit for sudden, massive spikes in traffic. Google Discover pushes content directly to users’ mobile home screens based on their interests (e.g., woodworking, vintage tools, or hand planes). If Google’s algorithm picked up this image or the forum thread it belongs to, it can easily drive 75,000+ views in a matter of days.

2. Google Image Search (Featured Results)

If someone searches for a highly specific keyword—such as “vintage brass infill plane” or “handmade smoother plane”—Google often pulls high-quality, authentic user images directly into a prominent, large-format visual box at the top of the search results page.

3. AI Overviews & Gemini Visual Grounding

Google frequently pulls exact images from authoritative, long-standing community websites like WoodCentral to visually back up its AI-generated answers. When a user asks an AI search query about hand plane identification or restoration, this specific image may be featured as a primary visual reference.
