Westward Ho!

Well, after months of planning and weeks of final packing and tidying up the homestead, we shoved off for points west on Monday, May13. We’d hoped to be on our way by 9 am but were grateful to have gotten away before noon. Here’s a shot of our camper just before I disconnected her from shore power out in front of the shop. Somehow we managed to get all our stuff, including the dog and all his effects, into it.

Day 1 was spent in transit to Mariel & Rob’s house in Hudson, Ohio, about 395 miles from home. It was a great opportunity to test out the handling of our trusty steed on a particularly windy day in Pennsylvania. By the time we reached White Haven, where the PA Turnpike meets I-80, it was actually snowing.

The trip was uneventful and quite comfortable, despite the headwinds, crosswinds and occasionally heavy truck traffic. Candy was a great co-pilot, as we tried to decipher the new GPS/audio unit. We still have a ways to go before we’re comfortable with all the functions and settings, but we were able to connect our phones via Bluetooth for hands-free dialing and touch-screen dialing.

We arrived at Mariel’s house in time for a nice pasta dinner with the family. We’ll be here for a few more days as we continue to plot our itinerary westward.
