My earliest experiences with wood and tools were as a child, learning how to use a hammer, saw, and paintbrush from my Dad and Grandfather. They were always busy finishing a basement, building a cabinet or bookcase or treehouse. But most of what I've learned has been as an adult. I read everything I can, pick the brains of everyone in woodworking stores, watch everything I can, and then try it out myself. I probably would not do or know half of what I do, if it weren't for Badger Pond and WoodCentral. I started out using powertools and upgrading those. However, I am enjoying getting into handtools more and more. There is a kind of quiet zen and peace in using them that I find restful. I am enjoying "flatwork" and make all kinds of things from small boxes, to picture frames, to shop cabinets, to large pieces of nice furniture. There is currently no lathe in my shop (although I love to lurk on the Turning board). Some day there may be one, but everyone warns me not to get one if I expect to continue making flatwork.
