This one may be too easy (I say, embarrassed that I missed it).

How many squares are in this picture?

Maybe I'm of by 1, should it be 41?

Correct!

I just was'nt methodical enough to get this. If anyone else is having problems coming up with 40, check your count with the following count by size (side length where the smallest squares are size 1):

Size::Count

1::8

2::18

4::9

6::4

8::1
