Saturday Bonus Puzzler
Alex Y
Heard this one on Car Talk this morning. I think I know the answer, but would like to hear if anyone here comes up with the same answer before I am able to check it next Saturday.
A friend told me that three of the first five presidents of the US died on July 4, and asked me the odds of that happening. I said that I couldn't calculate it in my head, but it seems like a minuscule chance.
I also told him (honestly) that while I knew that the first five presidents were Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe, I had no idea when any of them had died. However, I offered 10 to 1 odds that I could name one of the three who had died on 7/4.
How could I offer such a bet, when it seems like I had only a 3 in 5 chance of guessing one of the three who had died on 7/4?
