Indeed he is. Sorry for the long delay in answering. Here's another hint. He was from Ellis's home state and Ellis has mentioned his museum a couple of times.

Doesn't disqualify you, but watch out on the Bealle buffer! You are correct Don. The answer I was looking for is Wharton Esherick and here is a link to his museum. Look at that staircase. Truly beautiful.
