Yes, you read this right. We need a team effort on this one. Below are 34 expressions, with some key words replaced by their initial letter, in caps. For instance, in number Zero below the "H" and "D" stand for "hours" and "day", so the expression is "24 hours in a day". What do the other initials stand for?

We may have done this before, but we didn't get them all. I have the answers to 26 of them, which I most assuredly could not do myself, so I know I was part of a team effort somewhere; maybe here.

I will put out some of them I recognize (maybe the low hanging fruit):

26 Letters of the Alphabet

7 Days of the week

12 Signs of the Zodiac

52 cards in a "poker/playing" ? cards deck without jokers

13 stripes on a United States Flag

18 Holes on a Golf Course (Golf - a Ruined Walk in the Woods)

52 Weeks in a Year

365 Days in a Year (although it should be 364 1/4)

1000 Years in a Millineum ?

12 Months in a Year

I will stop there.

Excellent work! 28/33

Alex Y

Jim, they were looking for 52 cards in a PACK, but I think you were close enough.

Henry and Larry: You added three I had not gotten before (I miscounted in the original message--I only had 25 answers):

15 Men on a Dead Man's Chest

8 Tentacles on an Octopus

13 Loaves in a Baker's Dozen

Here are the five we have left. I have an excel sheet to grade them, but it is protected--it will say "true" if we get it right, but I can't see the answer.

100 C in a R

13=UFS

23 P of C in the H B

9 P in S A

6 B to an O in C

Re: Excellent work! 28/33

Larry Barrett

Here is a guess for one:

23 Parables of Christ in the Holy Bible

Re: 33 puzzles

#9

Or . . .

Henry Higginbotham

23 Pairs of Chromosomes in the Human Body

(But Larry's guess seems more likely, given some of the other entries on the list.)

Re: 33 puzzles

#10

A couple of WAGs

Henry Higginbotham

These don't seem likely, but they work:

100 Centavos in a (Brazilian) Real

9 Provinces in South Africa

Re: Excellent work! 28/33

Alex Y

I couldn't come up with "parables"

But it turns out they were looking for the answer Henry gave

Re: 33 puzzles

29/33!

Alex Y

Nice one

Re: 33 puzzles

#13

30/33!

Alex Y

Yes on the provinces in South Africa. I was looking for something in South America, but couldn't make it fit.

The 30/33

Alex Y

Here is the output of the "grader" on this, with Henry's guess on 100 C in a R and my guess at 13=UFS. Neither work, but I'm posting them here in case they generate an idea or you can suggest a different version I should try. This spreadsheet is very particular--you even have to duplicate the originator's errors ("a Octopus" and "Dead Mans Chest"), so if I have misspelled, or you have a misspelling I should try...

Re: The 30/33

Larry Barrett

My daughter suggests 100 Centavos in a Reale would be correct in Mexico.

Re: 33 puzzles

Alex Y

We just may have to give Henry and you credit on this one. Your answer(s) are right, and who is to say that the puzzle author's answer is any better.

Maybe .01 Rupee or Ruble or Riyal starts with a C?

Re:

Ed in Leaside

Cents in a Rand

Re: 33 puzzles

#18

That's the one they were looking for

Alex Y

I think Henry's Brazilian version and Larry's Mexican version are just as valid.

Re: 33 puzzles

#19

And then there was one

Alex Y

Ed got the version they were looking for in 100 C in a R, and I tweaked my answer to 13=UFS to read "13 is Unlucky For Some" and that worked. So now we only have

31 6 B to an O in C

to go.

Re: 33 puzzles

#20

Re: And then there was one

Larry Barrett

No answer, but a suggestion that the C could either be a country (Canada, China, ...) or perhaps a game. Could it be Cricket, (picking up on the Rugby and Football theme)? something like 6 Batters to an Out in Cricket? I don't know the rules for Cricket.

Re: 33 puzzles

#21

Nearly there!

Alex Y

Larry: you are on the right track here. Any British sportsmen (or more recently independent colonials) want to refine this answer only slightly?

Re: 33 puzzles

#22

Re: Nearly there!

Larry Barrett

After reading a little about cricket, how about

6 Bowls to an Over in Cricket.

Re: 33 puzzles

#23

Correct!

Alex Y

The spreadsheet I have wants "Balls", but I agree--from my reading in Wikipedia, at least, "Bowls" is the better solution.

So I'm going to use my authority as puzzle poster to declare your solution correct! ;)
