Friday Puzzler -- missing mathematical symbol

59

Your goal is to find the mathematical symbol that, when substituted for the question mark above, results in a number between 5 and 9. For instance, 5*9 is 45, which is larger than both, and 5/9 is 0.555... which is smaller than both.

I can think of a symbol that results in a number a little less than 6.

  that would be the one

I tried to throw you off with the example of mathematical symbols representing operations. But I couldn't fool Larry. The missing symbol is the lowly decimal point.
