What fits better (i.e. fills the hole more completely):

A square peg in a round hole, or a round peg in a square hole?

Maybe that's why there have been attempts to "square the circle", but none that I am aware of to "circle the square".

Can't fool anyone here. Lots of winners.

A round peg in a square hole will leave about 21% of the hole un-filled.

A square peg in a round hole will leave about 36%.
