From 1830 until steam took hold well into twentieth century, even through the 1930�s, wood merchant ships not only became larger but also put more and more sail on their ships. The large square rigged boats of the Pacific Northwest often carried four masts and up to 43 sails flown on, in front of, between, and after a mast. The main mast usually carried six but could support eight sails. Today�s trivia. Name the sails, bottom to top, supported on the main mast of one of the large square rig iron and lumber ships.
