Folks, I must say that I am still feeling the sadness of the loss of our friend Dan. I hope someone will step up and fill Dan's Thursday shoes here.
Ok...onto the question.... You will see by the picture that this would sure be a handy log to mill. Yes, it is in its natural form. While trees like it can be found in other locations, it is best known for being found where? Name the location.

Either it's fake as in photo manipulation, developed by an artist like the knotted trees of Japan, or some arborist using a clamp/mold like they do with watermelon - maybe Weyerhauser. Interesting. If real I'd like to see how it drys as the center is radial.

As Gary said....the best I can tell the outer growth rings don't appear to be growing around the square timber, betweet the bark and wood(??). But, during my earlier days working in S. central AR, I did see some hardwood trees that were squarish.
The answer is for real.

In Panama grow round trees like in all other regions, but the fifth most common canopy tree, Quararibea asterolepis, common Name MOLENILLO, to find in Cocl�, in El Valle de Anton, Manuel Antonio, Corcovado, Punta Leona, and Carara, native to all of southwestern Costa Rica grows square.
Its bole is generally angular and bending as it rises up through the understory, and it is creased by deep folds and ridges along much of its length.
In very small saplings (2 or 3 meters), branches leave the trunk at right angles and at regular, periodic intervals: with 5 or 6 of them appearing at discreet junctions spaced out along the bole.
These are typical characteristics of this sort of tree, it grows in this way without a known reason.
