Friday puzzle -- ones you can build

Likely many of you have seen some or all of these, but if you haven't and are like me, you will have to think long and hard about how you could build these. All are assembled from only the two apparent pieces of wood (i.e., no cutting apart, then laminating pieces to give the appearance of only two pieces joined). The joints are "solid", i.e., there are no hidden open spaces internally. And the surfaces not facing the camera contain no surprises; they are just what you would expect.

Your task is to build these and post pictures of the assembled and disassembled joints. Or short of that, explain how they could be made.



You may know one way to build this, but there are actually ten known solutions (most of which I can't visualize, even with an explanation). Can you come up with more than one solution?



Roy Underhill used this joint in a workbench he has built.



I think I know how this one was built, but I haven't seen the solution presented, so I might not have it right.

This is the way to make #1

#2 I can't draw, and I can't locate a diagram already made but it is a tapered sliding dovetail where the pin is tapered wide at bottom and it slides into place along an accomodating tapered tail that is a ramp. Drawings are in Underhills' Woodwrights Guide pp.13-16 which is online. Also used in the Impossible Mallet. I cannot get ithe pages and drawing to link up to WC.

I've seen the first two done as Gary describes. I'd be interested to see the 9 other ways to do #1. I can't imagine any that don'e involve an internal void of some sort.

#3 looks like a sliding dovetail cut in a shallow arc with an axis above and at right angles to the dovetail.

Good job, Gary and Bill.

Here is a picture of a joint like the one Underhill used for that bench and his mallet:


And here is a picture of that third puzzle partially disassembled, which works the way Bill anticipated.


Finally, here is a page describing the ten different solutions to the first puzzle. I think some of the illustrations are confusing, or possibly misplaced.

I'm not sure I see the difference between #3 and #8, but that was pretty much the same as a solution I had in mind. However, keeping the tails the same (proportional) size as the original picture would have required an internal void.
