Over the years I've taught many folks tree ID. The ol' say the teacher can learn from the student is Very true. Ask one student, Scott, to describe a certain tree and his replied: looks like a haunted house tree because of the dead branches near the bottom of the tree's crown. I often use this description today of that tree.
So what tree was Scott referring too?

Something more southern, perhaps, as well being a bit more "alive" than the haunted house theme would suggest.
Or perhaps the tree you find in a lot of old wooden sailing ship, like USS Constitution.

Not live oak or I'm guessing, thinking, not one of the white oaks. What's your second guess(?).
This tree is often found on poor(er) forest sites.

but bur oak is in the white oak group. However, you are correct that burr oak can grow on a drier site, than say the true white oak, alba. You were warmer with the pin oak, it's in the red oak group. Try again(?)
Hint: I call the oak leave a "bell shape"
