In one of my forestry classes, the professor ask why trees grew wood? Obviously, this is a best guess type question. But, I've always liked his answer, made good sense. Hint: Trees did not make wood for man to use. At least not in this discussion, please.
So for the golden wood bug award of the year: Why do trees manufacture/grow wood?

Because all the other trees are doing it 
They have to grow tall enough to get their leaves up out of the shade and into the sunlight.

If trees didn't grow wood then they would be just a pile of slime on the forest floor, one tree would ooze into another and it would be a very messy place to try to walk. The slime would all flow to the lowest point around and the hill tops would be exposed as islands in the slime. Man would have used stone for furniture instead of wood and we would all have granite cutting equipment in our shops.

As I recall: wood supports the tree�s crown above the ground. The tree�s leaves can out-compete the lower plants for sunlight.
Bill get the golden wood bug award for being first. Seems many folks knew the professor's answer. If I recall correctly, no one in the class came up with the answer. Thanks to all for playing
