Congrats to Bill for solving this one. Steve was on the right track for the start. For the rest of the solution, I'll see if a picture will do its 1000-word thing. BTW, I realized after sending this puzzle that the three sides of a 30-60-90 triangle might be considered trigonometry at a very rudimentary level, so maybe I should have said "no trigonometric functions explicitly used".
