I Need Finishing Advice:

Is it possible to sand off splotchy stain and start over?

I am having problems with the table top on an oak table I just built. I used MinWax Wood Finish stain , and it looks fine on the base of the table. But the top came out uneven and splotchy. I guess I should have used a pre-stain product, but what I read led me to believe that the pre-stain treatment is needed only for softwoods. And, as I said, the stain looked fine on the base of the table.

I am so unhappy with the blotchy appearance of the table top that I am wondering if it is possible to sand off most of the stain and start over with a pre-stain treatment before re-applying the stain.

Will appreciate any advice.
