Thursday Trivia

Dale Lenz

Going with a landowner tomorrow, Thursday, and he is taking me to a certain tree to let me sample its nuts. This tree is native to the Eastern US and Ive never tasted one of its nuts. What might this tree be? I believe the landowner knows more about tree ID than I do, soI think he knows what hes talking about.

Would butter melt in my mouth if I lied about the tree?

Be sure to bring your dog to bark at the squirrels to shag them away from the nuts. Do I smell sausage?

shagbark hickory?

Lee, if that's what you are referring to, that's not the tree I was thinking about. If your going after another tree, please make it clearer for my small brain, :"). Thanks for playing

Hint

When it WAS possible to saw lumber from this tree the wood looked like oak, at least to me.

Bingo!

All of the hulls were empty(??) The roots sprouts were old enough to flower, but there were no fruit, might need an opposite sex tree around(??). The present spouts had the blight, expect the top of this tree to die back soon. Rats, never have tasted chestnut nuts! Maybe in my next life. Thanks to all for playing.

Around here the grocery stores carry chestnuts this time of the year. You can cook them in a microwave, but if you do be sure to slice the hull with a knife before you roast them. If you don't they can explode and you will spend an half hour cleaning the microwave. DAMHIKT

You should have thought about this before trying it. While "Chestnuts cooking in the microwave" may have the right meter, can you really hear Nat King Cole singing it? Some things are just not meant to be modernized! ;)
