Friday Puzzle -- Driving instruction

A common instruction to new drivers is to hold the steering wheel at the ten and two positions. My instructor stated the directions a little differently, and told me to hold the wheel in the positions of a clock's hands at ten 'til two. I did that, but found that whenever I held my hands level, the car steered off onto the right shoulder.
What time should he have told me to mimic with my hand positions in order to have them symmetrical, approximating the ten and two position?
