Tuesday puzzle

Transform "GREEN" to "GRASS" in as few steps as possible, changing one letter at a time, with each step resulting in an English word. There may be more than one solution.

E.g., to convert "PINK" to "ROSE" in four steps, you could do:

PINK

PINE

PONE

POSE

ROSE

or

PINK

RINK

RISK

RISE

ROSE

A three-way winner!

Alex Y

1) You did it in one fewer step than the source of the puzzle had.

2) You taught be a new word, "treen"

3) that word was even on-topic for Wood Central!

Thanks for playing.

The solution I had seen, with one more step, was

green-greed-creed-Crees-cress-crass-grass

And "Cree" is a proper noun, which, while not disallowed, seems less legit.

Looks like I need to find some more difficult material!
