Humpday Triviola

Thomas Skaggs, Foothills of Mount Level

These pieces of furniture have a catch-all name, as there are a variety of styles. The general concept remains the same, despite their style. Their name is derived from a common activity that 19th century gentlemen in England would do to get away from the "women folk". What are they and what are they commonly called?

I'm guessing that the passtime involves what is now known to be a significant health risk. I'll just sit by and wait for the answer.

Johnnie V. comes thru with the answer. The thing to do to escape "the Mrs." was to go have a nice cigar. Where? A club for gentlemen only. The clubs were furnished with deep, comfy upholstered chairs where the gents would sit and smoke. There became the origin of today's answer...."club chairs".
