OK, this is complicated, but bear with me. Each word in the numbered list can be related to a word in the Lettered list by the following:

A synonym of the word in the numbered list is a homonym of a synonym of the word in the lettered list. example: bucket relates to light

Bucket has synonym Pail, which is a homonym of pale which is a synonym of light. Clear as mud?

OK. Relate these words:

1. crimson          A. locale
2. elk                 B. gawk
3. pair               C. scorch
4. soothsayer     D. darling
5. step               E. also

IF ( and that's a big "if") I did it right, then when you convert each of the numerals in my answer to the letter matched with it in the answer, it should make sense (with the one missing letter and numeral obviously paired).

2 in the left-hand column is matched with D in the right column

3 in the left-hand column is matched with E in the right column

...
