This has been described as "probably the most ubiquitous of the world�s toys, after the ball." It has ancient roots and was commonly found in ancient Greek gymnasiums. It started out commonly made of metal but over time became more commonly made of wood. It was even a tradition of use at an annual celebration at a women's college.

I might have to add a golden extension table too. Gary's excellent answer refers to a hoop. The toy is a hoop, commonly rolled with a stick.
