The original question is to explain. It is to be a given that the statement is true.

Okay, I think she had four sons and three daughters, and that something in the context of the original statement led one to regard "them" as referring to the woman and her children.

At first I was thinking goats, but

came to the conclusion that it doesn't matter. I mean which half are we talking about? There is no percentage in guessing the answer.

Given the answer you were.

Humans or goats if they were all boys, you could start anywhere and pick half. And the other half would also be boys. Percentages were not mentioned so no splitting was necessary.
