I think each letter stands for a different number - like a substitution cypher.

That is correct. Each letter stands for a number.

Is case significant?

For example, is the 'T' in 'Twelve' different from the 't'(s) in 'thirty'?

And if it is...

Was there a way to get it w/o trial and error?

I was able to

• deduce two values;



• identify one letter that could be anything, which I would determine based on what was left after assigning the other nine; and



• determine constraints or allowable pairings on others that greatly reduced the number of cases to test.

But I still had to use trial-and-error (getting the answer on the 4th case tested).

Unless I got it wrong... :-(

Not sure how to read Alex's answer. He will have to tell if it is correct. Also, I am not aware of any way to totally deduce all of the numbers without some trial and error.

If I did it right (that's a big if!), I used the same letter/numeral cipher to the extent possible to ask "Is this it?"
