Initial reaction would be an evergreen, but I am going to guess Maple because I know they produce a lot of syrup up there downeast.

From the looks of it...

Having spent most of last week backpacking in the Bigelow Range, I'd have to guess White Pine. And the most abundant animal species at this time of year is clearly the mosquito.

Think, it's one of them there trees that the cones hang upside down.

....that's hard to interpret! At face value I'd say no. But you might be playing coy and then maybe yes.

The cones are erect not hanging down, as pine do. But the cones will fall apart on the tree, don't drop as pine cones do, to the ground, see picture.

And yet another good but wrong guess.

One thing about Dale....his is one persistent trivia meister! Looks like he can cram another Golden Uni into his shop for knowing that the Balsam Fir is the most abundant tree in Maine. Which I am sure makes for a lot of merry Christmases there!

How do I know that there aren't more of another species? Did you count saplings too? How about standing dead timber?
