Friday puzzle2 -- So You Think You can Count

In case my other one proves too intractable to be fun, here is what should be a very easy one that I found quite difficult.

Count the number of occurrences of the letter "f" as you read the passage below the line of asterisks.

There are no tricks in this one. Honor system here. No pencil and paper or highlighting the letter. Just read the passage trying to count them, and report your result. If you want to check it, you can print out the post and circle the f's, write down the count by line, or do a "find" on the letter, or something else, but where's the fun in that?

We have the opportunity of looking at farming and the

future of farmers. How do we handle the training of farm hands?

Too, how to encourage the use of farm fundamentals? How do we

find right ways of improving future farm animals? How can we find

mechanisms that allow low-cost transfer of the farm from one farm

family to another farm family? This is the basis of effective farm

management and the future of financially sound farms.

is one of about five different answers I have gotten in trying to count the f's while reading the passage.

Post the results of your first try.

Only 26 on the first try

Those 'of's are easy to miss.

Second try it went to

31.

That was my first answer, too

and I was sure I had them all. After all, how hard could this be?

Re: Second try it went to

That's the right answer, but it took me four tries to get there, even knowing the target!

You are a much better counter than I!

I wanted to skip over the 'f' in 'if' wherever it occurred. I had to make myself slow down and specifically look for those, or I would not have gotten 31 either. I think we tend to skip over words like that when we read.

Yes, I think that is exactly what makes it so hard. I thought I had recognized the "of problem", and was proud of myself, but still only got 30. You are the first I am aware of getting 31 on the first try. Some people I have given this to have had luck on their second try, reading it backwards, which makes it easier to concentrate on the letters and not let your brain skip ahead since it is not discerning meaning.
