Before the gbmnt had the bright idea of importing the multiflora rose (which I have to fight every summer in my fields), midwest farmers used these trees with their ugly green fruit balls and thorns for hedge fences.

The native Americans from this part of the plains used the wood to make bows, hence one of it's names. I have 500 ft of this tree in old fence rows and can testify that it is impenetrabable. As kids we used to roll the fruit under moving cars to see the splash.
