Humpday Triviola

Today I am looking for the correct term for any wood that meets this description:

Abnormal wood that often forms on the lower side of branches and of leaning trunks of softwood trees: it is identified by its relatively wide annual rings, usually eccentric, and its relatively large amount of summerwood, usually more than 50 percent of the width of the annual rings in which it occurs: it shrinks excessively lengthwise as compared with normal wood.

So what term is used to describe this sort of wood?

I have been woodworking for about 25 years now, and would consider myself an enthusiastic amateur. My claim to fame (or infamy) has always been fixing stuff. I spent time in the Air Force in the 60's then went to work as an electronic technician for civil service. I finally got my EE, and being fed up with the civil service nonsense, took a job with Ford Motor Company until I went with the split to Visteon last year. I got interested in music and started playing in a bluegrass band. I wanted a new guitar, and that kind of led me into woodworking. I bought some books, a few tools, and built a guitar. Luckily, I didn't know any better than to try that as a first ever project. I still play it when I get a chance, so it must not be too bad if it can live for over 20 years. After a stint in Mexico for my job, I moved into a new house and built a small shop. Since then I have been collecting tools and skills, probably more of the former than the latter ;-). Finding this site has done more for my skills and enjoyment than anything else. I have learned a lot and really enjoy the friendships that I have made here. I have been married to LOML (Lori) for 32 years now and have 6 kids. When they are all gone, I want to get a 1 bedroom house (so there is not room for them to move back in) and at least a 6 car heated/air conditioned garage for a shop. (Dream on...)

I agree with Dan, but another name for it is "big box home store lumber"

Not a box or big box store lumber or related term.

The term I'm looking for relates to the physical nature of the wood...hint.

have a compression or tension thought on this question. Softwood has one of the two and hardwood has the other. Never can recall which wood is which. Thanks for the question.

Conifers = Compression, ie C=C. Shoot, I'll forget by the time I need to know this again, : ' >.

Wood that fits that description is called Compression Wood.

Just FYI: reaction wood is the woody material that surrounds the pith of the tree. As a general rule, about the first 15 growth rings. The RW is subject to brashness and longitudinal shrinkage, I.E. bows end to end on the face plane.

When I order logs sawned up from my sawer I usually ask for the pith to be boxed, called boxing the heart, than tossed, unless I'm going to be charged for it than will take it home for dunnage/firewood.

Last time I had some wood qtr. sawn a few of the boards had the pith on one edge: got a "(" edge to edge. Will have pith removed prior to drying next time, if I don't forget, : ' >.

Dan and the others were correct: Together compression and tension wood Are called reaction wood. The wood surrounding the pith is called juvenile wood, my bad.

I started to type "HD wood", but being from Atlanta, I didn't want to unfairly pick on our home-town boys. I'm not convinced that Lowes' lumber is any better. and I think our Canuckistan friends have other big boxes (Menards?) they love to complain about, thus the generic term!
