Doesn't end in "er". Also, note that they are not freestanding, but attached to, or part of the wall.

My answer was what Vitruvius called them (with a few too many 'L's). The Italian spelling ends in 'ro' and the French spell it with an 're'.

Like most of what Vitruvius wrote about, they originated in Greek architecture, but I don't know the Greek term.

Were you looking for "antae"?

I havent found a good explanation of precisely how these differ from a pilaster.
