First Humpday of 2009 Triviola

The celebrating is over but hopefully not the beer drinking. Speaking of which, one of the notable craft ale makers in America is Dogfish Head. Sam Calagione at Dogfish Head is known for brewing unusual and "extreme" ales. His brewery has two enormous oak barrels. But recently they added another barrel, 15 feet high and holding nine thousand gallons. It is made of a different wood.

The idea for the different wood came from a fan of Dogfish Head who found out about the wood while hiking in Paraguay. For what it's worth, the wood rates at 4,500 on the Janka scale.

What wood now makes up the new extreme brew barrel at Dogfish Head?

HOLY Brewania, Skaggman

Does anybody know what a Dogfish is and why they are called that?

I think that a dog fish is a mini shark

and they are the one's that make the four cornered egg sack "purse" seen on the shore. I always thought that the name was because they hunted in packs.

There's a town in Minnesota.

that comes close. It is the other 4500 scale wood that is not Lignum Vitae.

They are a shark- have caught some up to 10 lbs. But there is another reason they are called dogfish.

The Answer...and a question for Ken

Ken gets the first Golden Uni of the year for knowing that the wood is Palo Santo...sometimes called Holy Wood. I just wonder Ken, did you know that from knowledge of wood or from extensive research into ales? ;-)

Cheers!

Re: The Answer...and a question for Ken

Truth be known I have not had an alcoholic drink since 1992.That was when I reached my lifetime quota and further drinking was going to prove hazardous to my health. I saw or read something once about a wood from South America called Holy Wood and took a WAG.I remember the fact that it sank in water.

Dogfish are called dogfish because when you catch one it makes a barking sound while flopping around. Sometimes I think it may also be because they are bait stealers and the fisherman vents his anger by calling it an SOB.
