Tuesday puzzle.
Should be an easy one.
A bookworm finds a nice set of 10 books sitting on a shelf and decides to eat his way through all of them starting at page 1 of book 1 and finishing at the last page of book 10. If each cover is 0.5 cm thick and the pages of each book measure 5 cm, how far did he eat?

59 cm ? And why didn't we change to Metric when we had the chance so many years ago. I don't like having 2 sets of most tools. Metric is so much simpler. We'd all be used to it by now.

One needs to take a good look at the way books are laid out, as well as stacked on the shelf with respect to that layout. From that, I can either explain how to get the answer, or just provide the answer.
The little bugger has to eat only 49 centimeters to reach the last page of book 10.

61 cm. Just look at 10 books on a shelf.

As mentioned above. Think about the layout. Assume the books are on the shelf with book one to the left and book 10 on the right. With book one in this position, page one is on the right side, so the bookworm would not eat any of the pages and just one cover of book one. The last page of book ten is on the left as shelved, so the bookworm would also eat none of the pages and only one cover of book 10. This gives all the way through 8 books (48cm) plus two covers (1 cm ) for a total of 49 cm.

8x5cm, + 2x.5cm = 41cm total chewing.
How come? When stacked properly on the shelf, Page 1 of book 1 is to the right of it and the last page of book 10 is to left of it. Therefore the worm chews through only 8 books and 2 covers.... But....But.....
How did the li'l feller get in there? Musta chewed vertically up or down through page 1 book 1.

You forgot the covers of the 8 books in the middle ;-) The pages are 5 + 2 covers at 0.5
