puzzle and someone's explanation of how the mind works, I'd say the answer is "pick a number between 12 AND 3".

The man would be home in about 4 1/2 millifortnights.

The too easy answer

6 Miles to home- man @4 will take 1.5 hours.

Dog at 6MPH will walk 9MI?

I know this isn't right. After 1 hour, the dog will be home and turned around. The man will be 2 miles from home. If the man walks for 15 minutes, he covers a mile. The dog will have covered a mile and a half, which means he hits the man before 15 minutes and turns and heads home again.

And so the calculation goes until the man arrives home. Figure out how long before they meet and how much distance the man has covered. Then how much time the dog takes to go back, and the new position of the man after that amount of time.

If I'm not mistaken it is a limit problem, but it's been to long to remember the right way to do it.

"A man is walking home with his dog at a steady 4mph. With 6 miles to go the dog is let off the leash and runs all the way home at 6 mph. The dog immediately turns and runs back to the man at the same speed, and upon meeting him it turns and runs home again. It continues to run back and forth at the same speed until the man reaches home. What distance has the dog run since being let off the leash? "

Easy one....the man is walking at 4 mph with 6 miles to get home. He'll reach home in 1.5 hours. Dog is running at 6 mph.

dog's distance = speed * time

9 miles = 6mph * 1.5hours

Sometimes the simple one is correct ;-) Your original logic was exactly correct. No limits needed. It is just speed and time.
