Check out the following exercise, guaranteed to freak you out.

There's no trick or surprise. Just follow these instructions, and answer

the questions one at a time and as quickly as you can!

Again, as quickly as you can but don't advance until you've done each of

them...really. Now, ARROW down (but not too fast, you might miss

something).........

You're thinking of a carrot right?

If not, you're among the 2% of the population whose minds are

warped enough to think of something else. 98% of people will

answer with carrot

when given this exercise.

Freaky, huh?

Please report your results on the board.

My answers are below

Sorry but I came up with 9 and peas. But I have been told time and again that I have a warped mind.

6 and lettuce? Go figure, I'm in the 2%...:-)

Try this one:

Think of a number between 1 and 9.

Subtract 5 from the number.

Multiply the difference by 3.

Square the product (multiply the product by itself).

Add the digits of the new number.

If the sum isn't a 1-digit number, add the digits of the new number together. Keep adding the digits of each new sum until you get a 1-digit number.

If the new 1-digit number is less than 5, add 5 to it. If it's greater than 5, subtract 4 from it.

Multiply the difference by 2.

Subtract 6 from the result.

Think of the letter of the alphabet that corresponds to this new number. (A=1, B=2, etc.)

Think of a country that begins with that letter.

Think of an animal that begins with the second letter of the country's name.

Think of the animal's color.

Think of a fruit that begins with the first letter of the animal's color.

Thoughts on responses

1) Dale and I are the only "normal" folks reading this ;-) (Gary's half-normal)

2) Seriously, I wonder if there was a problem in the way I transcribed it, or if we really are a different group--this is usually more dependable.

3) Here's what I think is happening in the first one, at least for Dale, Gary, and me (and others I have tried this on). First we get into arithmetic mode. Then we are asked to pick from the range of 12 to 5. The conscious brain says "Whoa, what is happening here? Ranges are always given from low to high. Okay, so I guess it is just asking for a number between 5 and 12." Meanwhile, the unconscious brain is saying "We are working on arithmetic here. The last one was not an addition. A larger number followed by a smaller one looks like subtraction, which would yield 7" These two trains of thought end at the same time, the conscious brain hears what the subconscious is working on and says "Yeah, that'll work. 7"

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. I'll leave it to Dale to explain carrots to the unenlightened! ;-)

Thanks for playing.

9 and peas here too. He must have forgotten to say that "9 and peas" takes you way past the mundane, average, normal thinking. :)

Re: Try this one:

Step 8: What difference?

----------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a simpler one along the same lines:

Think of a number between 1 and 10.

Multiply the number by 9.

Add the digits of your result.

Subtract 5 from your new number.

Find the letter that corresponds to your number, if 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, etc.

Think of a country that begins with your letter.

Write down the name of that country.

Think of an animal beginning with the second letter of your country.

Think of the color of that animal.

Write down the animal and its color.

Think of an animal that begins with the last letter of your country.

Think of a fruit that begins with the last letter of this second animal.

Write down the fruit and the animal.
