Thursday trivia

What is the name for a type of forest where the tree crowns form a continuous canopy?

For extra credit, what is one type of tree that forms this type of forest?

Re: Thursday trivia

I'm sure my first thought is wrong and my second guess is probably wrong too so I guess I'll have to think of a tertiary response.

Is tropical rain forest too general?

Canoes are made from Kapok trees.

Re: Thursday trivia

Well, I don't want this to come to a climax too soon so I'll just answer the second part for this part of the midwest. The whole canopy forests are mixed hardwoods, usually about 60% oak with lesser amounts of hickory and walnut.

Re: I've....

always called it a closed canopy forest, probably not what Dan is referring to. Guess I need to publish a paper and give that forest type a name, : ' >. It's been written, in years past, a squirrel could travel from the Mississippi river to the Alantic ocean without ever touching the ground. Thanks for the question

Re: I've....

heard that statement about chestnut. Hard to believe a blight could cause that much damage so quickly.

hint and clarification

The word I am looking for starts with an "S" and is 11 letters. This particular variety comes in both "wet" and "dry" forms and is common in Australia. The clarification is that it is continuous canopy, but the word has another connotation referring to the vegetation type.

Confused you enough yet? ;-) I have confused myself. This might not have been a good question.

Never would have guessed that one. Had to google.

The oil from these 'hard leaves' is used in some cough-drops.
