Dovetail trivia
We've all seen the explanation of a rip saw cutting as if each tooth were a chisel paring away a layer of wood. Keep that image in mind, and consider this: You are making a 4" tall box out of 3/4" mahogany, with through dovetails at each corner (3 tails, 2 pins and 2 half-pins).
How many "chisel cuts" will you make when sawing the pins and tails for one corner? Try to guesstimate without doing any math, then "work out" what you think the answer is and compare. And actually make the cuts to get a third estimate.
No right or wrong answers here; the answer will vary a lot depending on your technique and how coarse or fine a saw you use. I just thought it might be fun to think about and compare answers. My guesstimate was off from my calculated estimate by a factor of more than 2. I haven't gone into the shop to actually make a cut to measure and count strokes to improve my estimate.
